A-Z: Inbreeding

Inbreeding is  the mating of animals that are closely related, mother and son, sister and brother and is sometimes used to get desired characteristics in a particular breed. When the animals are related but not as closely, i.e. cousins or half sibs, this is considered line breeding. Inbreeding occurs not only in the pedigree world but in small, feral colonies as well, and is responsible for many genetic health issues, including the breathing problems of Persians.

Love that inbread cat. And sadly too many breeders stretch the line when breeding animals for sale. Which the animals pay for. Hiss and spit.

Another beautiful cat, good to look at and good to read.

I don't know much about cats, but there seems to be an increasing trend for inbreeding for dogs.

People seem to do anything for money, including producing animals with health problems. But I love the inbred photo! Have a good week, Hugs, Valerie

I wonder if the middle part of that bread was covered with liver pate :)

Like the royals used to breed...

Hi, dear Sandra!

I suspect that the in-bread kitty in the picture does nothing but loaf all day. :) On a serious note, I echo Valerie's statement that some people do anything for money and don't care about the negative consequences. A practice that results in health issues for innocent animals should be banned.

Happy Monday, dear friend Sandra!

My two cats are brother and sister, but I had them both attended to before they got any funny ideas! :)

If your nose was smashed in like that, you'd have trouble breathing, too.

Did you know they found recently that inbreeding in humans wasn't as bad as people like to believe? Not that it's GOOD for a variety of reasons--but you won't create a mutant with three arms! It's just that if there are genetic issues present, they're exacerbated...and there are some genetic issues that when combined with two parents who have them create problems. But not three arms!

In-bread! Love the pun and Shady's response of kitty loafing around. :-D

Sandra Cox said...

Agreed. Hiss and spit sums it up:)

A lot of the backyard breeders do this indeed.

Thanks, Yvonne:)

Hi Bob, Yes, unfortunately it's done across the boards.

What a pun! Great photo and good words to remember.

Agreed on all counts, Val.

Ha!
I completely agree with your and Val's sentiments.

thanks for the laugh

Sandra Cox said...

Ha! Could be, Dez.

Sandra Cox said...

Exactly! I always thought that was pretty creepy.

Sandra Cox said...

:) Good for you, Lee. They certainly would have gotten funny ideas:)

Sandra Cox said...

I do and my nose isn't smashed in:) I can but imagine how difficult it is. I've also had fosters who came out of mills that had been so inbred their mouth was almost too small for them to eat. They had to pick up the kibble with their paw and place it in their mouth.

Love the pun! That cat looks very unhappy though. Humans do love to mess with things, don't they?

It certainly helped me for my I word:)
How are you, Jeanie?

That's a cute play on the word. I imagine in the next minute the bread will be in the cat.

Sandra Cox said...

My pleasure, Shortybear:)

Unfortunately, yes,Susan.

More so than any other species. Sigh.

I know it happens in the animal (breeding) world, but it should be outlawed. It's not safe for the kittens and their eventual offspring, either. I think people who put cats in danger should be neutered!

Forgot to mention that I DID like the bit of humor you shared from today's photo.

I think this is so sad!
(The photo is adorable!)

I've trapped a few inbred colonies for spay neuter and good thing they got fixed, if you get my drift. A little too much of the brother/sister, mother/son, uncle/cousin love going on there.

You know, we make jokes and think it's gross when humans inbreed but it seems ok for animals? We don't need to have a specific face or whatever just because some nut wants to showcase their cat to get a blue ribbon. They suffer as a result and it should be stopped.

Sandra Cox said...

Works for me, Elizabeth:)

Sandra Cox said...

I agree, Magic.
Glad you liked the photo:)

Sandra Cox said...

You're a saint for trapping and neutering.
Yeah, I get your drift:)

Sandra Cox said...

Yes, I agree, Birgit.
