Butterfly Bushes With Flyaway Prices

So I went to one of the popular chains that has a garden center with the intention of buying a butterfly bush.  I picked it up and put it in the cart then glanced at the price tag, forty-two bucks.  WT_?  And promptly put it back. Last weekend we went to the same store in a different town. Their butterfly bushes (a size smaller) were $6.98.  Needless to say that one went in my cart and stayed there.
I also picked up this little coleus.

$42???? For something which grows happily from cuttings? Highway robbery.
I love your coleus too, though the frost kills them here.
Happy Memorial Day to you.

Yes, it was very overpriced, glad you found a cheaper one. Same here though - some shops put exorbitant prices on their plants. Hugs, Valerie

way to much money, but lovely bush

Gee, haven't had a coleus for years. Does that sound like an intestinal disease? We have butterfly bushes here but I can't quite remember them or their flowers. $42? That is nearly $60 in our money. Outrageous. You can buy a tree for that.

We bought a butterfly bush this weekend...not as expensive as the first price but not as cheap as the 2nd. Glad you found one so cheap. My hubby planted it plus others since he is good with plants. Have a wonderful day and thinking of all the men and women who fought in all the wars

Hi, Sandra!

Good luck with your butterfly bush and your coleus. Over the years Mrs. Shady and I have planted a large number of flowering and berry producing shrubs that attract butterflies and bees and provide food for wildlife.

I wish you and your family a safe and peaceful Memorial Day, dear friend Sandra!

I'm really good at killing plants so no chance am I spending that much for one. What kind of plant is a butterfly bush?

Sandra Cox said...

I didn't realize you could start it from a cutting. Good info.
Yup, the little coleus won't last past the frost, but I enjoy them during warm weather.

Indeed. I'm trying to figure out if it was mismarked or a vendor price. Have a good one, Val.
Hugs

I'm glad you got one for a reasonable price. I'd never spent $42.00 on one little plant. A tree, maybe, but even that would depend on the tree.

Agreed.

Ha. It does sound like an intestinal disease. grin.
Yeah, something was definitely wrong.

Thanks, CJ:) You too!

Thank you, Shady. Back at ya:)

It was pretty strange.....

Sandra Cox said...

Ha.
They remind me of lilac bushes. Not so much the leaves, but the flowers and butterflies love them.

Thanks, Elizabeth. Yup, seemed pretty salty.

The first shop, that was rather expensive for a plant that was a little larger - oh dear!

Well done on finding one at a sensible price - and this post is so timely, as I've been meaning to buy one for my garden for ages - and you've just reminded me to get a move on and go and look for one! :)

Good for you Sandra! Remember, with Butterfly bushes, you have to cut them down, I think next spring, right to the base. Then it will grow again next summer. You always have to cut it down, but I forget when! LOL! Make sure to look that up, if you don't already know! I hope you had a great long weekend. I know you wished me a happy long weekend on my blog, but just to let you know, I'm Canadian. We don't have the same long weekend as you. But, I did have a good weekend! Big Hugs!

Hi Sandra! Thank you very much for your visit and kind comment. It's very lovely to meet you. I love the idea of the butterfly bush. But sheesh! $42 is awfully steep. I'm glad you were able to get it for a better price. I've always loved coleus. You're tempting me to go to the garden store.
