IWSG Wednesday

The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Members post about their  doubts and fears, discuss struggles and triumphs, and offer words of encouragement to others who are struggling.

January’s IWSG question: What writing rule do you wish that you’d never heard of?

What I wish I'd never heard of ....head hopping.  Are you clutching your heart and gasping? I know. I know. But have you ever noticed that some of the royalty in the writing world head hops?  We've been so programmed not to hop that when it does happen, it's now hard to follow.  I'll be the first to admit it can be overdone. But I believe there are times when used  it adds depth and texture.  When having more than one POV in the same chapter breathes life into a story.
Just saying.

Okay that' s enough sacrilege for one blog, moving on....

The Crystal has been re-released.

How do you like the cover? The cover artist is Charlie Volnek.  I  love her product and wouldn't hesitate to recommend her. She's great to work with and has always manage to capture my vision.  She also created the covers for Minder and Odin Cats.

Blurb:
The road to true love isn't just rocky, it's down right dangerous.

Excerpt:

Starting toward the counter to get a closer look at the jewelry, Gabby paused as she caught a glint of color out of the corner of her eye. Shifting, she craned her neck to see but the tinted shimmer disappeared. Curious, she walked in the direction the flash of green came from.

A row of black capes blocked her view. She pushed them aside and stared into the shadowy corner. Hidden in the gloom, was a sea-green crystal ball. It stood in solitary splendor on an antique claw-footed stand.

She took a step forward and ran her index finger along its smooth surface, the globe toasty warm against her damp skin.

Drawn, she splayed her fingers until her palms nestled around it. A delicious wave of heat ran through her, like sitting in front of a crackling fire on a cold winter day.

 Ecstasy coursed through her body.

Transfixed, she watched glowing green change to blue, its hues dancing and sparking like moonbeams on the water.

The crystal pulsed beneath her hand.

By degrees, the feeling of warmth disappeared and fear crept in. Her breath hitched as the color in the crystal fell away and a face formed. Its blurred outline moved back and forth, wraithlike and then sprang into sharp focus.

The blood drained from her face, as her nerveless fingers dropped from the ball. The face in the globe belonged to the hard-eyed stranger she’d bumped into outside the shop only moments before.

Available at Amazon.

Happy New Year and great article. Yes, I've noticed that some of the greatest writers head hop. It is amazing how Nora Roberts does it.
All the best for 2017.

Oh, how exciting about the re-release! That's such a lovely cover, for sure. Many congrats!

Congratulations on the re-release.
I knew about head-hopping, but I still had to shift point of views in one chapter in my first book because it just wouldn't work any other way. (How does one keep the story moving forward when one character all but passes out from pain? And the other soon dies? Head hopping.)

Well, I am not only an insecure writer, I am a beginner. I am insecure about everything. I look forward to reading your post on first Wednesdays to read experienced writers talk about the rules of writing.

Congrats on the re-release.

Head hopping has its place indeed sometimes. Stupid rules.

Simple but pretty cover.

I didn't like learning that head-hopping rule either.

Thank you, Yvonne! :)

Exactly. I think that's a very telling statement. Ha
Sometimes our creativity gets lost in rigidity.

Thanks, Heather:)

Hmm, One character dead. One character fainted. Now that's a tough one, Alex.

Good for you, Colette! I'm thrilled to hear you are writing. And as far as insecurities....you're in good company:)

Diane, Thanks on the cover comment. She managed to capture the essence of the book which is difficult to do.
Boo, head hopping rules. grin.

Thank you, Steve:)

I was going to mention head hopping, but this is a rule that I've come to stand behind. In the beginning, though, I head hopped all over the place. lol I learned to write by reading Nora Roberts, who does head hop a lot. For her, though, it's completely acceptable. For me, not so much. :P

Congrats on the re-release! Lovely cover. :)

Woot woot for the new release! Head hopping... I have one story written ages ago that head hops. I've been tempted to pull it out recently and blow off the dust. It worked though--because the POV was a third person perspective that followed the action of the scene rather than a specific character. *shrugs* Or so I remember.

Wow--Charlie did it again. She is a talented artist as seen in your gorgeous book cover. That excerpt piques my curiosity about the story. Great job! In my first book, my editor had a heart attack with the 5 different POV's so I had to prune it down to 3. You're right, I really notice when writers head hop. Sometimes smoothly. Sometimes jarring. Hey, I'll be right back here tomorrow as your guest. Looking forward to it. Thanks.

I wasn't sure what you meant at first and then I got it! I'm not just a blonde pretty face (eyes rolling up to ceiling). I get what you mean because when not used well, it can be confusing.

As a reader sometimes I appreciate the POV from another side but then it can be jarring at times. If it's done, unless done seamlessly would bring a reader out of enjoyment of reading.

Sandra Cox said...

Don't ya hate the double standard. Grin.

Sandra Cox said...

I've got those too, Crystal. I say pull it out and blow off the dust:)

Sandra Cox said...

Charlie is awesome!
Enjoying your visit:)

Sandra Cox said...

Well you definitely have the pretty face:)
No reason, why you should have known that term. Good for you for figuring it out.

Sandra Cox said...

You are exactly right. It needs to be seamless.

Jeanie said...

I have not got a CLUE what head hopping is. I'll have to look that one up! Meanwhile, love the color!

Magic Love Crow said...

I have to write the same as Jeanie did. I don't know what hopping is? Sorry, I'm not a writer! LOL!
Your new book looks great! Love the cover!!
Happy New Year!! Big Hugs!

Sandra Cox said...

Thanks, Stacy.
No reason why you should:) It's hopping from one point of view to another.
Thank you:)

Thanks, Jeanie. It's hopping from one point of view to another.
