IWSG Wednesday and Did You Know Thursday

The first Wednesday of every month is officially IWSG day. IWSG was formed by Ninja Captain Alex Cavanaugh. Members post about their doubts and fears, discuss struggles and triumphs, and offer words of encouragement to others who are struggling.

Twitter handle: @TheIWSG

Hashtag: #IWSG

Let’s rock the neurotic writing world!

Our Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and hashtag is #IWSG.

The awesome co-hosts for the July 1 posting of the IWSG are Rebecca Douglass, Ronel Janse van Vuuren, Cathrina Constantine, and Jacqui Murray!

Thank you!

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Remember, the question is optional!
July 1 question - Is there anything you'd like to see changed, added, and/or rearranged about the book publishing industry?

Another good question.  I’d like to see other distributors set up programs like KU at Amazon.  It seems like it would be a benefit to both the distributors and the authors. I’ll be interested to see what other authors have to say.

June/July Reviews in no particular order.

THE GUEST CAT by Takashi Hiraide

This was a different read for me. It was amazingly well written. The words flowed with symmetry and beauty, but it was not an HEA read.  The ending left me feeling empty and disappointed. Due I think to cultural differences and the fact that I couldn't quite wrap my head around the philosophy of the book.

PORT OF CALL by MK Alexander

This is the 5th book in the steampunk sci fi Seven Sisters series.

Milo York and his loyal crew now face their greatest challenge of all. In Book 4, they saved the Lost Colony and are heading home, but what is days for them, in actuality is a thirty-year trip.  They haven’t aged but their friends, that are left, have.  The kingdom is in upheaval, ruled by a tyrant more monster than man. Where once Milo served the crown, he now finds himself fighting against it to save the worlds of the Seven Sisters.

The author did a wonderful job of ‘out-of-this’ world building😉 and character development. My favorites being Mr. Treacle the giant cat, the bird men—Mr. Kaw in particular, and the mechanical men, especially Gideon Pi. AND he tied all the pieces together with a very satisfying ending.

Since there are several characters hopping in out and of the series, as is to be expected with so many worlds, I would recommend starting with the first book in the series THE SHIP.

A well-written, well-told tale by an author who researches ceaselessly.   Recommended for steampunk and sci fi lovers, as well as readers who just want to kick back and enjoy some great escapism. Enjoy.

 JANIE’S SECRET by Sherri Hollister

This is the second in the Harrill Family Chronicles and focuses on Janie, one of three Harrill sisters, and Mike McKenzie, the chief of police, who years ago were high school sweethearts that were torn apart. Now, years later they find themselves in the middle of murder and mayhem. Even though Mike wants to pick up where they left off, Janie has a secret she doesn’t dare share and keeps Mike at arm’s length, until she decides to risk her heart…again.

The building suspense keeps the book moving at a fast pace. The characters are well-developed and allow the reader to love or hate them. And the world building is solid.

This can be read as a stand-alone, but I would suggest starting with the first in the series: WILLOW’S RETREAT.

Recommended for those who enjoy a mix of suspense and steam.

STORM WARNING by James Byrne

Dez Limerick is a fascinating character. He’s considered a ‘Gatekeeper,’ because there’s no door he can’t open and keep it open as long as necessary. He’s muscled and strong but not particularly tall which in itself makes for an interesting protagonist, as most aren’t usually medium height. He’s got a quirky personality, smart and an interesting way of talking. In this particular story, a research facility in Newfoundland has gone dark and no one can get in or out. The state department needs Dez to get the door open and find out why.

It's a great edge-of-your-chair read and kept me flipping pages.  The ending is unexpected. I can’t say I liked it or didn’t like it.  It was just different.

I need a coin with Dez Limerick on one side and Jack Reacher on the other to flip to see who my favorite is, because I sure can’t decide😊

AND

Did you know, Les Miserables was one of the most read books by American soldiers during the Civil War?

I love that that one book kept the pages turning. That's the best. Is KU, Kindle Unlimited? Happy reading to you and Happy Summer!

I agree with you that there needs to be more options for self-published authors.

I love that idea -- other distributors having a subscription like reading platform, but they'd have to host a substantial readership to make it worth the effort.

Lovely reviews as always!

Interesting choice of read during the war.

I don't think I could even begin to read Les Miserables!

Good collection of books, Sandra. I too love some of the Amazon ideas. KU changed how I publish and read.

Kobo has a subscription service and they aren't exclusive. For audiobooks, Spotify has a subscription service, too, which isn't exclusive.
Yeah, more publishing options (and reading options!) are always welcome.

definitely! and instead of charging us for not selling enough (D2D) we should have more help selling our books

Happy Canada Day anyone who's celebrating! Just popping in briefly to let you know I absolutely love Sandra's book Reuben Hayes and there's a review up here:
https://sylviakayrose.wixsite.com/scribevibes/post/absolutely-love-reuben-hayes-by-sandra-cox-here-s-my-book-review

Amazon charges $50 to leave book reviews (ie you have to buy $50 worth of products) and I'm not quite there yet but when I've paid their blood money I'll be putting reviews there too.

I totally agree that indie authors need more options and definitely more compassion - we are basically cash cows for some sites who charge "account maintenance" if we don't sell enough, but are themselves the cause of decreased sales.

Also can I do an SSP? For horror and weird fiction lovers - Strange Vibes Weird Fiction Anthology Volume 2 is launching today!
https://books2read.com/u/mKZxRB
25 twisted tales by authors from around the world!

thanks everyone, happy blessings & have a great week!

Great collection of books, Sandra! The Guest Cat...I love the title and illustration, but it's too bad it wasn't a more enjoyable read for you.
Thank you so much for sharing.

The KU program at Amazon sounds like it would give writers a chance to make their books available. (I had to Google it. 😂 ). Great reviews. Enjoy the 4th, Sandra!

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Ivy, It's an excellent read. And KU is Kindle Unlimited.
Happy summer and happy reading and whisking to you too;)

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Linda, The Guest Cat was exquisitely written. I just couldn't wrap my head around the philosophy and it didn't have the ending I was hoping for. Oh well. Thanks for stopping by and have a grand one.

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Louise, Google is our friend;) Glad you enjoyed the reviews. Happy 4th:)

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Crystal, Exactly on the substantial readership. I think I'd put my money on Apple....
Glad you liked the reviews.
Happy 4th.

Too bad about The Guest Cat. I love cat stories. I always love reading your great reviews.

I never read Les Miserables, but I saw it on stage one summer.

I feel for those authors who have limited means getting their books into the hands of potential readers.

Truedessa said...

I haven't read Les Miserable but, I saw it at a playhouse once.

Sandra Cox said...

Indeed, Alex.

Sandra Cox said...

I've never read it either, Jamie.

Sandra Cox said...

Jacqui, Our tastes in reading material is pretty similar:) KU was a stroke of genius, wasn't it?

Beth Camp said...

I didn't think anyone wrote a short response to this month's question! A helpful suggestion. I do really appreciate KU for the wider platform, so all my books are available there, but I'm not sure it works for all writers. Thanks also for the interesting reviews, even if neither are on KU!

J.S. Pailly said...

More things like KU would be good, so long as they don't demand exclusivity or impose too many other restrictions on authors.

Sandra Cox said...

Good to know. Thanks for the info and for hosting.

The Happy Whisk said...

Thanks, Sandra. I'm currently reading Nancy Drew. Silly and fun and I love that! I do like that your book was a page turner. Those rock!

Sandra Cox said...

My pleasure,JP. Sending you a hug.

Sandra Cox said...

Hey, Elizabeth. I love good cat stories too. I appreciate you taking time to read the reviews:)
I haven't read it and I would have loved to have seen it on stage.
Writing is a tough business, for sure. You have to do it for love or passion.

Sandra Cox said...

Good for you, True. I'd love to see the play.

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Beth, I'm a KU girl too. Though, I would like to see other options out there... Thanks so much for stopping by.

Sandra Cox said...

Hi JS, I wouldn't even mind exclusivity if they had a healthy readership. On my way over to your place:)
