IWSG Wednesday and Did You Know Thursday

The first Wednesday of every month is officially IWSG day. IWSG was formed by Ninja Captain Alex Cavanaugh. Members post about their doubts and fears, discuss struggles and triumphs, and offer words of encouragement to others who are struggling.

Twitter handle: @TheIWSG

Hashtag: #IWSG

The awesome co-hosts for the June 4 posting of the IWSG are PJ Colando, Pat Garcia, Kim Lajevardi, Melisa Maygrove, and Jean Davis!

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Remember, the question is optional

June 4 question - What were some books that impacted you as a child or young adult?

I read every horse story I could get my hands on: INDIAN PAINT, FROG THE HORSE THAT KNEW NO MASTER, BLACK STALLION, etc. BLACK BEAUTY broke my heart.

May/June Reviews in no particular order.

Book 35 in the Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicles focuses on the paranormal. The authors themselves actual paranormal investigators, part of a team out of FL.

THE GENIE EFFECT by MK Alexander

What happens when a celebrity chef finds a lamp with an actual genie in it?

Celebrity Chef James Carter is on vacation in Morocco when he discovers a lamp in a tourist shop that he just has to have. Imagine his surprise when he rubs it to clean it and a genie appears, an attractive one at that.

After Azar emerges in a whisp of smoke James’ life becomes one big adventure filled with fun and romance. But not everyone is as enamored with genies as James is with his. An ancient wish has created a brotherhood whose sole purpose is to wipe out every genie in existence. And the brotherhood has nearly succeeded.

How will James and Azar get out of this dangerous coil they find themselves in? You’re going to have to read their story and find out for yourself. Grab your beverage of choice, put your feet up and settle in for a fun read.

M.K. Alexander worked for the New York Times for over ten years.

FRANKLIN PIERCE, America’s 14th President by John DiConsiglio

Franklin Pierce was not a well-known president or one that was very well liked. He tried to strike a compromise to keep the Southern states from seceding and ended up making both sides furious.

He also lost a beloved son two months before his inauguration. His wife was devastated and refused to attend, believing it was a sign from God that Pierce shouldn't run for office.

Pierce spent most of his time in office without a VP AND appointed his friend Jefferson Davis Secretary of War. He was also the only president to place his hand on a law book instead of a bible when he was sworn  in.

It’s not a known fact but there is speculation he was an alcoholic. And given his life it would hardly be surprising.  I found this book to be informative, but sad.

*This is part of a young person's presidential encyclopedia set, but also suitable for adults.

Hi Sandra - horses, horses and more horses = not for me! But love reading stories with them in and have always wanted to be able to 'hop on' one and ride off into the sunset! Reading ... I'll always be doing that - cheers Hilary

Many books influenced me as a child, but if I had to pick one it would be Robert Louis Stephenson’s (or should that be Stevenson’s) “Treasure Island.” It fuelled in me the desire to travel and I have spent my life doing just that.

National hug a cat day? Goodness, if I wasn't allergic, I would be all over that. Loving this question and adding majorly to be TBR list.

I loved the Misty of Chincoteague books (though I'm not that wild about horses up close!) and the Nancy Drews, which sent me on a life of mystery. I still have trouble trapping mice after bonding with Stuart Little. And of course, there was Anne Frank, my guidepost to this day.

I tried to hug my cat, but she squirmed away looked at me and I know she was saying, " Idiot".
I read some horse books but The Diary of Anne Frank really got to me and I read it every year I was on high school.
When I was in grade school, either grade 6 or 7, I found a book called, Tracy and Hepburn by Garson Kanin and I could not put it down. I realized there were books out there about movies a d stars. I should read it again.

I wonder why so many of us were horse lovers when we were young. I was, from a distance. I'd be scared to death up close. Did you ever read Misty of Chincoteague?

I was drawn to books about horses, too.

Good choices,Jeanie. Do you know they have mouse traps that just catch them and allow you to release them into the wilds.

Frog, The Horse Who Knew No Master was a favorite of mine. I didn't own it, but I checked it out of the library so many times. Thank you for bringing the wonderful memory to mind. I read all the Black Stallion Books too. My Friend Flicka and Thunderhead.

Hi Liza, I didn't read that. Don't know how I missed it. I love horses.

I loved Black Beauty too! It spurred me on to write a novel in 7th grade. About a horse, of course. That's what my IWSG post is--Black Beauty and its impact on my life. I have enjoyed several books about the presidents. This sounds like a winner. Thanks for sharing your great reviews/books.

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Lee, It's a classic for sure. And like many classics, I found it very sad:(

Sandra Cox said...

Jenni, Your dog will definitely do:) And intriguing is a good word for Genie Effect.

Sandra Cox said...

You are most welcome, JP. Sending you hugs.

Hi Adam, He did make a lot of choices I don't agree with. On the plus side, he helped the country's infrastructure and was friends with Nathaniel Hawthorne:)
