IWSG Wednesday

The first Wednesday of every month is officially IWSG day. Members post about their doubts and fears, discuss struggles and triumphs, and offer words of encouragement to others who are struggling.

Thanks, as always, to Alex Cavanaugh, founder and Ninja Captain extraordinaire. And co-hosts:

Diane Burton, Kim Lajevardi, Sylvia Ney, Sarah Foster, Jennifer Hawes, and Madeline Mora-Summonte.

FYI: The IWSG monthly question can be found under the IWSG Sign-up tab on the Insecure Writer's Support Group Blog.

June 5 question: Of all the genres you read and write, which is your favorite to write in and why?

Sigh. If I could answer that question, I wouldn’t have books out in the YA Fantasy, YA Paranormal, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance, and metaphysical genres. I’m a dabbler. Though, I have decided to limit myself to Western/Western Romance. We’ll see how that goes. I do feel it's better for an author to pick one or two genres and stick with it, at least until established, instead of frog-hopping from genre to genre as yours truly has done:) What genre do you read or write?

I am a multi-genre reader and like reading things which cross the genre boundaries. That said, at the moment I am primarily reading non-fiction (on a range of topics).
Love that cartoon, and am sure it WOULD keep writers up at night.

Your books are varied and very different, that can't be a bad thing. I have loved all of those I have read- Hugs, Valerie

Bah, frog hopping is more fun.

This frog is hopping.

I also like more than one genre. I am even a big non-fiction fan, too. I think your popularity comes from your effective ability to cross many genre lines.

So far I've mostly stuck to one genre. Easier on my nerves.

I think you are right because we all have a specialty that works the best for us even in something we love to do. The comic is hilarious and true

I love the cartoon. I do like multiple genres but mysteries best and then non-fiction. To write -- more short essay types. I have plot issues!

Being a multi-genre reader is great. It broadens horizons.

Thank you, Val. You do my heart good.

It is more fun--most of the time:) A little nerve-wracking when you first hop into an untried genre.

Ha. Love it.

I like to explore other genres and won't ever limit myself. Metaphysical genres? I'm going to have to look in to that to see what it's all about. :)

Thank you for your kind words, Elizabeth. They mean a lot.

Great meme, I like non fiction.

I think it's great that you can write in so many different categories! Huge congrats on that.

And it's worked well for you:)

Besides mystery, the western genre is the biggest in our library. :-)

I do like the cartoon.
I quite like historical novels … the book I'm reading at the moment is about 'The Waterway Girls' and how they helped out during the second world war on Britain's canal system.

All the best Jan

I like to read most genres, but for writing I generally stick to just a couple.

Sandra said...

That comic is definitely true:)

Sandra said...

We all do:)

I can see your point. I think for one thing, it helps your readers when you write in primarily one genre. They "know what they're getting" when they pick up one of your titles!

Sandra said...

What all do you write, Chrys? Romantic Suspense and nonfiction?

Sandra said...

There's some great nonfiction out there.

Sandra said...

Thanks, Lee:)

Sandra said...

That's what I like to hear:)

Sometimes plot holes seem like their own genre

Sandra said...

Sounds like you're enjoying your read. And no doubt learning a lot as well.

Sandra said...

Thumbs up. That's what I'm shooting for:)

Sandra said...

Good point:)

Indeed;)

As a kid, I devoured true crime and romance, then it was strictly romance/erotic romance, then it moved into nonfiction, animal stories and motivational, then I went crazy with cookbooks, which I still collect today. Now, I read almost exclusively thrillers, spy novels or historical fiction, but I still dabble with romance. This is one of the reasons I truly admire authors who can tell stories and keep us interested in so many genres. The skill set and creativity of you and so many other novelists is truly phenomenal, and we thank you! Hug to you Super Sandra! RO

Awww, thanks, Rockin Ro.

I agree it's probably better to stick with one genre. Too bad I don't follow that. I write sci-fi romance, romantic suspense, cozy mysteries, and MG sci-fi adventure. You'd think I could stay with just one. Do what feels right!

Good for you, Diane:)

I love the cartoon! LOL! Do what's best for you Sandra! Big Hugs!
