Did you know that navy bean soup is also called Senate Bean Soup because it's served every day in the Senate dining room? It was first put on the menu in the early twentieth century.
We had bean soup, with ham and onions, and cornbread every week when I was growing up in the Midwest. Who knew we were eating the same food as the senators were being served.

In an Italian household growing up, chicken soup (basically penicillin), minestrone, L'escarole (which you would probably call Italian Wedding Soup), but never ham and bean.

That soup sounds...icky. I am not a soup person..I may be the only person in the world who is like this. Mind you, I love Chicken noodle if it is made like my mom did and my hubby does it well. He also makes a great turkey soup. I used to like Tomato soup but that is a no on any bean soup. Why do I think it would be smelly fart afternoon in the senate chambers? I love navy bean soup. The baking soda takes care of the gas issues.
My father liked Great Northern beans which are very similar to Navy Beans. My mother likes a meal of them in she is still in love with my long gone father. It does make a good meal with the addition of slaw. So at least once a week I make them. Soup sounds like a good idea. I'm going to look into it.

My mom did the Great Northern too. How lovely your mom fixes them because they remind her of your dad. I hadn't thought of serving slaw with them. I like that idea!
