Did You Know

Did you know that in the first presidential election the president and vice-president were chosen by electors named by state legislatures. The electors had one ballot and could  name two men. The man with the most votes would be elected president and the man with the second most votes VP. Behind the scenes, Hamilton lobbied to keep the votes down for Adams so that Washington wouldn't be embarrassed by the number of votes Adams received.

Oh dear.
How I wish that ego wasn't such a powerful force in politics.

Interesting. Some presidents just don't want others to get votes! Hugs, Valerie

Our political system is complex enough but yours is unfathomable and seems it always has been.

I know. Right? God forbid we just have a straight national vote.

I hear ya on that. I'm not sure there's a politician out there, no matter how good, that doesn't have one.

It's amazing how little things have changed between the first election and today. Of course, today you can add foreign interests and smear tactics to the behind the scenes antics.

Not to mention the mail being sabotaged. Scary, isn't it? VERY scary.

Gads, that's only too true.

Thanks, Yvonne:) Glad you think so.

I did not know that. I think I'm probably glad they don't do that now.

Amazing. Never knew this. And in all the years I had to keep taking early us history in different grades.

I wonder how different it would be if the vice president was the one in second place instead of picked.

Hahahaaa... ego is ego no matter what century. I had no idea but they wouldn't teach this in schools as it doesn't look good does it.

Sandra Cox said...

I can't agree with that.

Innit the truth.
