I seem to recall something like this and that he was actually, apparently, in love with a slave and had children with her. There was a huge amount of press about this a few years back. The African American descendants wanted to be included in the "family reunions" and be recognized by a society. I think it did happen but not easily.
Why thank you:) My thoughts, he kept them because they made his lifestyle possible. Washington had it in his will to free his slaves after he and Martha passed. She went ahead and freed them after his death because she was afraid of an uprising.
