Did You Know

Did you know, daffodils can be hazardous to the health of your other flowers because they secrete an alkaloid sap?

Addendum to the above.  Daffodils are poisonous to animals, and you don't want to put them in an arrangement because of the sap, but in the garden it would probably depend on  whether the other plants came in contact with the sap or the crystals.

My auntie taught me to never put them in a vase with other flowers, perhaps because of this! Have a wonderful day, hugs, Valerie

My landlord is more of a hazard to my plants than daffodils are! :)

(No...I didn't not know that about daffodils, though!)

I had no clue. That is interesting. I wonder if any plants near it die??

I had no idea. Himself planted tons of daffodils by the driveway along with tulips. All the daffs came up but not many tulips. Maybe their way of being dominant. We always though there were no tulips because the chipmunks like tulip bulbs, but not the daffodil bulbs. Maybe the sap is the real reason.

I like the daffodil drawing, too.

They don't seem to have hurt my strawberries, blackeyed susans, coneflowers or dill! (Or, unfortunately, the weeds that take over that garden!)

I'm wondering if this is more when the flower is cut or broken and the sap leaks onto the other flowers or flower arrangements. What do you think?

Sandra Cox said...

That was so kind of you to post my info. Thank you, Stacy:)

You're welcome, J.P.
