Well...as you know, we went to Philly for a few days. The main reason we were going was to attend the opening of a gallery showing both the baby girl and her husband's work was in. When we got to Philly, we found out the gallery had decided to Zoom the opening. 😏 We watched the presentation downstairs that the baby girl and SIL were taking part in upstairs. Then went to the gallery the next day. Here is some of their work. (Some of Meghan's may be a repeat from pictures of her last showing.)
And here's pictures from the zoo. Some animals seemed comfortable in their environment. Some I hated seeing enclosed.
What about you. What are your thoughts on zoos?

What a wonderful reason to travel. Bucketloads of talent obviously run in your family.
I am ambivalent about zoos. For some animals it is their only hope of survival and they have improved dramatically, but...
Beautiful art, your daughter is very talented. Zoos are good, as it gives people an opportunity to see animals, but it's always hard to see animals without their freedom. Hugs, Valerie
There are some great photos. Our zoos are quite good at providing natural environments for their animals, but for big animals and those who are used to great distances, it is of some concern. I think elephants might suffer the most.
They Zoomed it? Now? Really lame.
The purpose of most zoos have shifted over the years. Now many are focused on conservation.
Delicious eye candy. Congrats to Baby Girl and SIL. My favorite is the wishes (dandelion puffs) I enjoy visiting zoos and I think most do a good job with the goals of educating the public and conservation for the animals.
Your daughter is a talented artist. Glad you got to go see her work, even if it was on Zoom in the end.
Beautiful art by your daughter. Lately I am questioning zoos.
Your daughter did a great job. She is extremely talented. So glad you got to see the show, even if it was a Zoom opening.
I have always been ambivalent about zoos, then our zoo managed to get five elephants to go with the one we had. They built a 55,000 acre enclosure that has now won several awards. The elephants are treated well, and have a ton of freedom and areas to run, swim, walk, and forage. These elephants were in danger of being killed, so our zoo saved their lives. However, I can't say the same for some of the other animals at the zoo. The birds especially break my heart. Please don't get me started (grin)!
She is just so gifted and these are beautiful. I'm glad you shared them with us -- you had to be proud as punch! The zoo looks fun, too. I don't know if I've ever seen a giraffe.
It was indeed:) Thanks, EC. Both are talented artists.
I hear ya on zoos. They are better than death but the large animals need room to roam. I'm all for the large natural habitats. To my way of thinking:)
Gorgeous work! You have such a talented family :)
My first job was at a zoo. I hated seeing some of the animals kept like they were, like the bears, elephants, and big cats. They have made huge improvements over the years and now we need to protect certain species, but still I prefer seeing animals in the wild. Zoos have made some effort to offer that environment but at the least it educates people about animals and their world. I love being near the animals, but I might have a free Willy moment too.
Thanks you.
I'd like to see the large animals have more room and the large birds have freedom, unless they can't fly, which is very possible if they are in a zoo.
Hugs received and returned.
We got to see it the next day. They just didn't have a live opening. It worked out okay. Thanks, Natalie.
YOU have a special day.
And caged birds hurt my heart.
I agree, Andrew. The elephants. And I would include the big cats.
Conservation is a good thing. And they are so much better than they used to be. Now, if they could just increase those cages a smidge.
Hey CJ,
That was my favorite of the SIL's pieces showing too:)
YOU have a great one:)
sandra; nice works by both your daughter and SIL !!! conga ratz two them both tho sorry about the whole ZOOM thing ~~~ :(
I've been to both zoo'z and animal sanctuaries; while I can understand the "intent and purpose" as to why the animals are there in the first place; I think some places "overcrowd" based solely on revenue purposes....which is a shame
bats...in the first photo ??? YOW ~~~ ☺☺
Some zoo's take animals from there natural environments. Some actually take them in if they are hurt, sick injured, etc. It is fun to look at animals, but sometimes you never know what the animal had actually gone through. Nice post by the way! :)
Thank you. I do too, Christine. Some have really done a great job of creating a habit with enough room to roam. Some not so much.
Good on your zoo for the elephant habitat.
I hear ya on the birds. We passed the habitat of an eagle. It bothered both the HH and myself.
Thanks, Jeanie:) I'm proud of both of them. They did a great job, didn't they?
You haven't seen a giraffe? I hope you get too. They have the gentlest faces.
Thanks, Denise. They are talented for sure:)
I didn't realize you worked at a zoo. The large animals caged are what bothered me too. The ducks and small monkeys seemed perfectly happy:)
Yo creo que los zoológicos deberían dejar al animal lo mas cercanos su habitat y ser cuidados. Estar encerrados para divertir no debería ser una opción el hombre debe respetar a los animales. Te mando un beso
Congrats to your daughter and shame they had to Zoom it.
I love the show Crikey! It's the Irwins and the rescue a ton of animals, most of which they are able to release.
Congrats to your daughter and SIL who have showcased their work. I like the concepts they have shown which remind me of sailing and I love The dandelions in blue. I like everyone zoos for lol the good they now do. The older zoos where the animals don’t have much room should be given the money to build them up or they should be closed but the zoos like Toronto, San Diego etc...educate the people about the animals. They help people understand the importance of the beautiful creatures plus they are often the only means for these animals to survive. The small zoos like the jerk who was thrown in jail shou”d be closed but I am all for these nice ones.
I agree. The sanctuaries do seem better than the zoos in many instances as far as a more 'normal' environment though, don't they?
Yes, those are bats and they were HUGE. Biggest I'd seen.
That's for sure. I'm all for taking them in if hurt, etc, but taking them out of their environment...
Thanks, Aishu;)
I agree, J.P.
Sending you hugs,
Thanks, Di.
Ooh, haven't watched Crikey, but it sounds like something I'd like.
Thanks, Birgit. Those two are the SILs. I like them too:)
I haven't been to the Toronto or San Diego zoos. Glad to hear they are better than the old ones.
Such lovely and impressive artwork. I know you're a proud mom. As a kid I visited the zoo so much that they started to know my name.(lol) Similar to how it is now at the libraries. Like you, I find that seeing animals enclosed now really seems to bother me. I imagine if animals could actually carry on conversations with us, we'd find out how they really feel about a lot of things. Happy Friyay and sending lots of hugs, RO
You know how much I love your daughter's art! She is so talented!
I haven't been to a zoo in years.
Big Hugs!
