Do You Know Jeanette Marie?

With us today is Jeanette Marie. If you haven't heard of her yet I'm confident you soon will. Jeanette is an aspiring author who holds down a fascinating day job.
Here's Jeanette's post:
~*~
I’m currently an assistant for New York Times best-selling author Alyson Noёl, which means I get to help one of the nicest and coolest authors on the planet with administrative tasks and PR outreach, which can include everything from selecting SWAG items to scheduling interviews with reporters.

Over the past few years working with Alyson, I’ve learned a lot about the publishing industry. Perhaps the greatest thing I’ve learned from Alyson is perseverance. Her personal road to publication is truly amazing (she worked on her first book for more than 15 years before it got published).

I’m an aspiring author myself and, as I’m sure most writers can attest, the publication process can feel a lot like playing the lottery--

Step 1 - Write awesome book.
Step 2 - Query awesome agents.
Step 3 - Cross your fingers and hope you have the winning ticket.

Your email is then crashed by a flurry of requests for your book and you skyrocket to #1 on the NYT bestseller list.

Okay, so it only happens like that in the Hollywood movie version.

There’s no doubt that the publishing industry is challenging, and building a career as a successful author takes a lot more than winning a golden ticket. When I was a teenager, my dad always told me no one was going to knock on my door and offer me a job. If you want a job, go out and get it. If it doesn’t exist, create it.

So if “author” is the career you want, go for it. And don’t let anybody stop you.

Read. Write. Revise. Repeat.

Don’t stop revising that book and sending out query letters until someone says yes to you.

If aspiring authors gave up and took “no” for an answer, we wouldn’t have…

Life without Harry Potter would be pretty boring, wouldn’t it?

If every writer who received a rejection gave up, the shelves at your local bookstore would look a little plain and empty right now. That’s what’s so great about this business—it’s a marketplace of ideas. And there’s always room on the shelf for another great idea.

Alyson Noel has been kind enough to offer one of her books as a giveaway. For a chance to win one of her books just leave a comment and your email addie.

I love your dad's saying. It's so true. My dad tells me that anything worth having is worth working for. Also, so true. There another quote I love that has to do with writing that says "If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. ~Toni Morrison" I love that one.

Good luck,
Michelle

Everything you said was inspiring and true. Reading and writing has always been a hobby of mine, nothing on the scale of Ms. Noel and you of course, but it's fun. Going to a world that you create and getting lost. It relieves stress for me. And maybe one day, I will send my works out to someone out there, with your message in my mind. 'Never give up until someone says yes.' It really is inspiring. I wish you luck in your endeavors and I cannot wait to see a book of yours published soon.

Books are those items which can inspire, motivate us,spike our imagination/curiosity and help while away time productively..no matter what the content of the book is..
There's something to be learnt/a bit of information in each book..
thanks to the authors who give us books to read and cherish..

Hats off to them..

maybe someday i will get to regale people with the stories in my mind..

I'm also an aspiring author who has felt like giving up lately and this post really was inspiring. Alyson Noël worked for fifteen years on one book and I was ready to give up after one year. It's true no one will give you anything for free, this is a testament. I'm very inspired to persevere stronger than I was before. Thank you!

P.S. Excited to read the first book of yours! :)

I was lucky enough to meet Alyson Noel at BookPeople in Austin, TX for the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour and I got to tell her personally how her book helped me through the loss of my Husband and that I've been hooked on the series ever since.

And Sandra...for me to not read or write is to not breathe and I bet it's the same for you. It sounds like you have an amazing job and are learning valuable tricks of the trade so to speak! Keep on blogging and let us know when your book drops!

I just published my first book, "The Witch Guardian" available on Chapters.ca or General Store Publishing House website. My 8 year old just finished reading it and she said it was awesome. "You know what I liked best mommy?" she asked me. "There are no pictures but you describe the characters so well I can see them in my mind" That was worth all the time, effort and perseverence.

I wish someone could give a step by step on how to write something someone is going to read. How to make the perfect NY times best seller.
If it were easy I think there would be a idiots guide to it. I really enjoy reading your literature and I look forward to being a small writer myself. Someone told me that I would never be a good enough writer and I want to be able to prove that it's not true. Anyway, Thank you for writing. I really enjoy you books. Please write more! :)

As an aspiring author I understand 100% what you're saying. My little saying that I tell everyon is that "if you want to badly enough and try hard enough, you'll get there." I've been working for 2 years on the first book of my series, lost my USB and some chapters along the way, but those really crappy things get taught me lessons. :) Even when it's your worst day, never give up on your work. You'll get there. I have my friends demanding me get it published so that they can read it, and how they all want the first copy. Haha,I hope it happens like that for everyone. Good luck! ♥

That is so true. Every person who aims to be an author one day has to accept the fact that there will be difficulties along the way. But if you really want to write and have people read your book you can't give up. Nothing would be fun if there wasn't a little challenge in it. Keep on trying and you'll be an inspiration to others.

Good luck,

Good blog. Keeps my hopes up for hopefully getting this one novel that I've been working on for 7 years to see the light of day. :)
(Though, I must say that the editing world intrigues me greatly and I find reading through my friends' manuscripts quite fun and relaxing.)
Good luck,
Sarah

Best of luck with the writing. I often wish I'd persevered when I was younger and I don't feel very inspired at the moment. It sounds like you're in a great place at the moment. Hope it all goes well.

Hi! I am a huge fan, you are so lucky, I have no doubt that it's the best job in the world. I too aspire to be an author some day, in fact I am writing a book right now, and I am proud to say Alyson helped make me the writer I am today. I am only 15 but it's coming along well. I don't always have much time to work on it. But every minute of my spare time goes to writing. I one day wish to have my books published. Every day I have new ideas. And since I was 10 that's all I wanted to be. I want to be just like you and Alyson, to have my books published next to Alyson or you would be a dream come true for me. I would also love to have a signed copy of one of her books. Thank you for listening. May you have great luck in publishing a book one day soon!

Great advice! I am an avid reader of every type of book imaginable, and I have read all of Alyson Noel's Immortal and Riley Bloom series. Reading is such an adventure, and I believe that writing is too. I'm almost done with my first novel after many hard years of balancing writing, reading, and college, but it's so much fun! I love writing more than anything, and I will never give up on my dream to one day become an author.

What a great job...I am boiling with jealousy! My dad always used to say, "write your dreams," and "a closed mouth doesn't get fed." Ah the wisdom of the fathers.

Wow, your blog was so inspirational. I'm actually only a teenager, but I already know that being an author is what I want to do. I'm working on a novel, and sometimes it is so hard to convince myself to go on. But your post really makes me appreciate the work of an author, and shows me that it isn't impossible, not ever. I love what your dad told you, and thank you SO much for telling it to all us readers. It's so nice to have a light in the storm. You are such a lucky person to work for Alyson Noel and be a writer yourself, and I wish you all the best of luck with everything! Thanks again for the post and opportunity to win a signed book. XOXO

Growing up, I never liked reading. I was smart and got good grades, but hated reading! It wasn't until much later, when I met my husband in 2006.... He wanted to watch the newest Harry Potter, and I told him I hadn't seen any of them. He couldn't believe it. Long story short, I watched and fell in love. Natually, I HAD to know what happened next, so I started reading the books. Loved them!!!!! Then Twilight came about and we read the series together after watching the first movie. I enjoy reading more these days, though I still am not a book worm. As for writing, I journal/blog my life and that about the extent of my interest in writing. :)
Authors are amazing. The stories they tell and the way they do it blow my mind. <3

Hi there ! This blog is certainly inspiring and definitely encourages hidden talents out there ! I recently started to read Alyson Noël's Immortal Series and I love it ! Not only do I love the characters and the unbreakable live between Ever and Damen, but I love some of the morals and the incarnations fantasies . The last book was amazing and shows the interconnectedess between all of the characters. Anyway, the point all comes back to working hard for what you believe in. And thank you for making me understand this! It boosted my inner confidence ! I might consider a career as an author!

That was really inspiring. There may be a gazillion of obstacles in front of you... discrimination, rejection, dissapointment, failure, mockery... but in the end if you really go for it... it is so worth it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

My life is heavily inspired and moved by both music and books. It is kind o sad when I think that others don’t share the same passion for books, either because, as some state, they don’t “like to read” or were turned down by a book that they really didn’t like. There are so many books out there, so many things to learn... it’s sad that many don’t care.
Books are one of those things that can make you smile, can make you cry, can make you go from hyper to downer, can make you learn or even can make you forget about the present, problems or just make you spend some quality time. And believe me when I say, there are so many good books out there that you could literally shut yourself out from the world and just live fantasy land (and although that is not necessarily good, it is true).
I’m not very good at expressing myself, I’m more of an observer, but when people get me going about the books I read, I feel I can be free. I love to share stories with others, and to share my love for books. As a writer (and terribly perfectionist) I don’t think I would do much good, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy books, have my on stories in my head and support authors/writers that I like in every form possible. I respect writers and their works (and working progress) very much. To know that that wonderful world with fantastic characters came from one single mind and that that person was able to share it with everyone... It really is an amazing feeling. I can only guess how it feels for writers to see that their stories made a change or that they simply reached someone.
I guess all I’m trying to say is that I wish good luck to any aspiring author and that I really hope you can one day share that piece of yourselves with the world... And thank you for your effort.
Best wishes to all,
Diana

I totally agree with your dad, if thats my mum's fault don't blame me! Publishing is sort of like the lottery great comparison :) it's also sort of like sport, sort of I personally can't run or do anything sporty to save my life, but you can't learn how to have a talent. It's just there, lots of people take it for granted aswell. I cannot imagine the world without harry potter, there is not such thing!! Anyway I know lots of people are applying, but I hope I have a chance to win? ( does that sound selfish I hope it doesn't)

bye

I really hope that you one day get published! Also congratulations on the job for working for Alyson, she is one of my favorite authors.

Good luck!
