To Drink Or Not To Drink...Diet Soda

So what's your take on all the hoopla surrounding diet sodas?
Reports are saying:
It may lead to kidney problems
It may put you at risk for heart disease
It may lead to obesity
It may damage DNA
It may rot your teeth
And then there's the can itself. It's coated with endocrine disruptor bisphenol. Whatever the heck that is. It's supposed to be full of all kinds of bad juju, that can cause reproductive problems, obesity and heart issues.

What's your thoughts on this? I drink two cans of diet a day and it would be hard to give up. The only thing I can say with any certainty, if it caused obesity I would have put on the pounds years ago.

Great discussion post. There is also a study being done to see if artificial sweetners have also contributed to alzheimers. I have had some concerns about aspartame for a couple of years. Aspartame is like one of those lab "accidents" Searle who was generating a tetrapeptide of the hormone gastrin, for use in an anti-ulcer drug accidentally tasted it and discovered it was sweet. After reading that, I vowed then to read labels and not get anything that had aspartame in it. While I tried to avoid it, it was added to just about everything we eat.

If it's the can that is bothering you, drink from a bottle. I don't like sodas from a can anyway.

I have heard it causes obesity. How zero calories can do that, is beyond me! :) Still, it is healthier to drink water. I just wish it tasted better.

I've been drinking diet soda since the 70s (back when they had sacchrine in them!). I don't have high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Yeah, I could stand to lose weight, but I had that problem BEFORE I drank diet sodas. Too much of ANYTHING will cause problems. I don't see how two cans a day would be an issue.

I've used coca cola and pepsi to clean my toilet efficiently so they can't possibly be good for your tummy if they're able to dissolve plaque in the toilet bowl :)

I gave up drinking soda awhile ago. It's expensive and full of empty calories. I never liked the taste of diet soda. Saccharine had a funny after taste. Aspartame became one of my migraine triggers.

Hey Gossip Girl, that's worrisome about the big A. I use ALOT of sweetner.

AND it damages the brain. I don't touch any of that stuff anymore. Don't particularly liked it before either. Have a lovely Monday.

Funny how they always use "may" trying to bring a scare tactic. As for the fat, one only gets fat if they sit on their butt and don't exercise, then blame it on the food for them being lazy arses. I believe it rots your insides and never touch it, but to each their own.

Hi Stacy, same here. I've been at it since the 70s. Used to only do the liters then developed a taste for canned soda. I'm thinking about giving it up and going with tea, but I use sweetner...round and round I go.

The worst thing about diet soda in my opinion is aspertame. If you look it up online you will find, among other things, that it becomes toxic when it hits a certain heat level. Since most soda is transported by truck (non-refrigerated), it gets HOT.

So, my biggest problem with diet soda is that most people don't know what the REAL DANGERS are. If all of the information is out there and people choose to drink it anyway... fine by me. It's a free country and we don't need the government making our decisions for us.

Well it's up to you. I personally would not drink diet soda unless there was nothing else left in the entire world, including clean water.

Yikes, Dez!

Hey CJ, I haven't drank regular soda in years. I swear I can feel the sugar rotting my teeth when I drink the 'real stuff':)
But I think you've got the right idea about giving it up.

You've got the right idea, Santa:)

Vanessa, I can't afford that......

Hi Robin, I think you nailed it. Folks really don't know what's in the drinks and that they could be harmful. It's not widely publicized. You have to actively seek out the information.

Seriously don't like it, huh Julia? grin

Meh...

Something is gonna get us...

Of course, lung issues shouldn't be one of them... or diet cola stuff...

I'm thinking at the hands of an angry husband... although that could be painful...

Thank you for stopping by...I see Robin up there... she's dangerous!! ;oD
