That seems shocking to us now, but it wasn't that unusual 170 years or so ago. He was deeply in love with her, in fact she was the love of his life and his muse for many of his works before she died of Tuberculosis 7 years later. He never got over the loss.
No, I did not. I continue to learn something new every Thursday! :)
Unfortunately, sadly, and disturbingly...in some instances...in some religions it still happens today.
Not so many decades ago....Jerry Lee Lewis' personal life was hidden from the public until a May 1958 British tour where Ray Berry, a news agency reporter at London's Heathrow Airport (the only journalist present), learned about Lewis's third wife, Myra Gale Brown.
She was Lewis' first cousin once removed and 13 years old (even though Brown, Lewis, and his management all insisted that she was 15) – while Lewis was 22 years old.
Elvis wooed Priscilla from when he first met her when she was aged 14...albeit from afar until about three years later.
No. Back then it probably was pretty common. I don't think genetics had worked out the complications of all that and people married much younger. I don't think I'm shocked or even concerned, considering that although if it happened today I'd be up in arms on a number of levels. I wonder how old he was at the time?

Eeeeuw. I didn't. And he has just plummetted in my estimation.
Truth is often stranger than fiction! Hugs, Valerie
No wonder he came up with the Tell Tale Heart. Madness prevails.
Now that's disturbing.
No Sandra I didn't know that. Wasn't she under age????
Yvonne.
The perv!
Ewwww! What is it about men wanting to score with very young girls?
😱
Wow.
You got that right!
Yup!
That's for sure!
Hugs received and returned.

It was rare but in the 19th century, marriage for minors was allowed in the states.
I haven't a clue. To echo Alex, the perv.
Uh huh.
What were they thinking?
Guess he wanted to keep it all in the family? Blah.
Terrible.

Twenty-six. Twice her age.
Indeed.
Pretty strange.
I read that about Poe. While the age might not have been unusual, I don't think it was the norm.
She certainly did inspire some long-lasting works.
I didn't know that!!!
All the best Jan
Yuck!!!
