Sentence/meaning:  A contronym is a word that has two contradictory meanings.

Did you know, that President Lincoln kept documents in his top hat when he wore it? Supposedly the phrase 'keep it under your hat' came from Lincoln's habit of keeping documents in his top hat.

Hi Sandra - Contranym ... I could immediately understand, but hadn't heard of it before. Under your hat ... I also didn't know that - hope he never had to doff it to another. National Day of Cowboys ... I'll have to have a read ... cheers Hilary

I am grateful for bloggers like you, Sandra, who challenge us and present interesting facts too. I have used the expression “Keep it under your hat” many times without knowing where it came from. As for “contranym”, I have never used the word, of that I am sure, but it was intuitive to figure out the meaning. I say I have never used it - but I will now! All the best - David

I'm so sorry that I broke your mirror but I'm also sorry that your mirror cracked as soon as you looked into it. Would that be a contronym? Not sure I spelled it right...oh well.

EC, Thanks. Glad you enjoy the snippets.
Hils, Sounds like he would take a peek at them during speeches/meetings. Quite handy:)
Thank you, David. You're very kind.
Jamie, You are ahead of me. It's a new word for me;)
Thanks, Val. You just made my day. Hugs
Birgit, Good question. I'm not sure. One contronym example would be bolt: flee or secure. Contronym is kind of a unique word isn't it?

That was an interesting tidbit. I never knew where that phrase originated. I just noticed Geller's Find on your page. That looks like something I would enjoy reading.

Although contronym was new to me, it makes perfect sense. IO didn't know that about Lincoln's hat, either. You are a font of wisdom.
