Did you know, that President Lincoln kept documents in his top hat when he wore it? Supposedly the phrase 'keep it under your hat' came from Lincoln's habit of keeping documents in his top hat.

I am grateful for bloggers like you, Sandra, who challenge us and present interesting facts too. I have used the expression “Keep it under your hat” many times without knowing where it came from. As for “contranym”, I have never used the word, of that I am sure, but it was intuitive to figure out the meaning. I say I have never used it - but I will now! All the best - David

I'm pretty sure I've heard the word contronym.
So this is why we say "Keep in under your hat."

Birgit, Good question. I'm not sure. One contronym example would be bolt: flee or secure. Contronym is kind of a unique word isn't it?
