Well,
so far (knock on wood) the scratching post seems to be working. I think it helps that it's fairly tall, has tight carpeting, which seems to appeal to the critters. And I'm sure the catnip I spray on it doesn't hurt anything:)

Signs of spring here would be alarming. There is a slight discolouring of some tree leaves as autumn approaches. I am not fond of red peppers, or too many of them.

So good to see signs of Spring. That ain't happening here for another month at least. The kitties have a scratching post that's about 3 feet high on top of the post is a carpeted, round sitting area or napping area we call the nest. Quill likes to take naps in it. To the right of the post is a carpeted barrel. Calli used to like to nap in that. Sometimes they fight for the nest. Quill uses the scratching post. Calli likes to scratch on my mother's chairs.
Flowers are coming up here. Hope the scratching post continues to work.
My tulips are coming up too. My northern flower beds are a bit behind your southern ones, but we're moving into spring and I'm ready for some flower gardening!
Spraying catnip on that post, I think is a great idea! My wife grows catnip in our yard, and our cat loves it!

Your cat looks quite happy. Here in coastal Iberia (Portugal and Galicia) the coming of spring is heralded in the countryside by broom and gorse and heather. In towns, flowering quince and peach and pear and apple blossoming trees. But it's still cooooooold.

Sounds like you picked out a good one. This one is just under 3'. I think the height is one of the reasons it appeals. We could order the seat attachment. I'm sure they'd love it. Those darn Calli/Callie cats are just terrors on furniture aren't they? That's what has been our problem with Callie.

It's been warm where I am. I can't believe it's already March.
What a handsome boy! No scratch pads but I do have one very teeny -- half inch, if that -- sprout in the garden. I'll take it!
Funny...last week, my hubby made a scratching post at about the same height but no carpet on it. I will tell him about this and maybe that will work. No life in our garden as we are to get another snowstorm tomorrow late in the day.
