A-Z: Van

The Turkish Van, or Van for short, is an old country cat that is still new to America. It has a thinner and smoother white coat than most cats and its tail and ears are colored. Its eyes are blue or amber or one of each.It enjoys swimming, is independent, vocal  and not much of a cuddler.
The Van is healthy but suffers from obesity.
This cat needs to be combed regularly. It's good with adults but not the best feline to have around young children.
If you are interested in adding this cat to your family, please try your local shelter, rescue, petfinder.com or overstock.com.

Not sure I'd want a cat that required a lot of grooming.
Turkish Van - does it come with a 100,000 mile warranty?

Besides tigers, I didn't know other cats enjoy water. Ink does not.

Hi, dear Sandra!

I never heard of the rare Turkish Van. It is a beautiful, sleek, active cat with distinctive markings and an unusual love of water. Those qualities I admire but, as a pet owner, not so much its independence. I like animals that don't mind being handled and stroked. From what I have learned, the Van doesn't appreciate or tolerate much human contact.

Happy Tuesday, dear friend Sandra!

That's a good looking cat. It's fun to watch a cat enjoy a swim!

Not much of a cuddler?? Wait until he meets me haha!

I've never heard of these but after seeing the video I want one! I'd love a swimming cat and those kittens are the cutest things ever! Although, I agree -- I do like a cat that loves to be held (which Lizzie doesn't!). I miss that!

Never heard of this one. Guess it hates little hair pullers haha

Don't think I've ever heard of the Turkish Van before. What a lovely-looking cat!

Thanks. You too, Val.
Hugs back.

I've never heard of a Turkish Van, NOR a cat that likes to swim. That alone makes it unusual. I keep learning more and more each day!

They sure are, M-w.

Hi Shortybear,
You're right. It isn't a well known breed here.

Sandra Cox said...

Thanks, Yvonne:)

Ha! Good one:)

A former hair stylist's parents had a cat that loved to swim with them in their swimming pool. Bet it was a Van. But you are right. It's not common.

Sandra Cox said...

I like the snuggle bunnies, er kitties, too, Shady.

Sandra Cox said...

It sure is, Tamara:)

Lovely - blue or amber eyes! I didn't know any cat existed that liked the water, and always had the impression that cats don't like to cuddle much, irrespective of their breed. The clip was an eye opener!

I am so sorry!!! If it is too late, I understand. It's funny how my pictures didn't come out when i e-mailed you before. Again, my apologies

Interesting that this breed may have been on Noah's Ark! And I have never seen a domestic cat swim like that, wow!

Sandra Cox said...

I have no doubts that you could remedy that, Blue:)

Fascinating! We just have a regular old moggie, except she is rather beautiful, a silver tabby. A bright cat, she is trained not to go in some rooms, comes to call, will stop doing what she is doing if I ask her to, will leave the room when asked... etc. Se learned to undo the cat flap with her teeth - I had to make a plank to keep it shut at night! ~Liz http://www.lizbrownleepoet.com

They all have their own personalities don't they? Some love to cuddle, some not so much.
Have a great one, Jeanie.

Sandra Cox said...

Can't blame them for that:) Grin.

Sandra Cox said...

They sure are. How are you, Heather?

Sandra Cox said...

I've only known of one cat that enjoys the water. I'm assuming it was a van, but don't know that for sure. It is fascinating.

Sandra Cox said...

Oh yeah, most cats are cuddlers and want their share of lap time.

Sandra Cox said...

Definitely. That would certainly enhance the experience for them:)

Sandra Cox said...

We still have time. Not to worry. Me either. I don't know what that was about.

Sandra Cox said...

Ooh, a silver tabby and she is soooo smart!

Are there any pets that DON'T suffer from obesity? Seems we all tend to overfeed our furry friends!

Lee said...

A beautiful-looking cat.

Re Stephanie's comment...my cats don't overeat. They seem to pace themselves. They know when they've had enough.

Similar has applied to every cat I've had in my life. Dogs, of course, (don't misunderstand me, I love dogs) are different creatures...they will just eat and eat like machines! :)

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Jess, How are you? Yup, all kinds of interesting breeds out there.

Sandra Cox said...

For sure, Steph!

Sandra Cox said...

Hi Lee,
Good job! Most cats, like humans:), love to graze. What do you feed your guys? My son, also leaves food out and his doesn't overeat but I don't dare at my house.

What a cute cat! I want to go swimming with it! Nice to see a cat, that isn't man made.
